LOS ANGELES, Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- KidsGive is proud to present its newest addition, Piper Whelan from Sydney, Australia to be added to the Karito Kids World Collection. Piper is an 11-year-old who lives with her mother, father and 'lil sis in Bondi Beach. She is an avid surfer and lifeguard, which they call Nippers down under. Being outdoors so much, Pip begins to see the effects that humans have on our environment. Known as a "Greenie" by her friends and family, Pip takes it upon herself to educate others about how they can make a difference until one day when she was cleaning trash along the beach and realized what she thought was a bag was no bag at all. Her book reveals the mystery of why the sea life was dying. Pip and her pals from the Karito Kids World Collection will be at the American International Toy Fair this February in booth #6436.

And what a market smash it proved, offering Americans a sense of freedom, mobility, privacy, their own piece of turf and a yard for the kids to play. Plus plenty of jobs and profits, from autos to oil to real estate to fast food. The new form became virtually synonymous with the American Dream. Two generations of Americans knew practically nothing else. But in the 1990s, the model began to lose some of its luster. Suburbia's big parking lots and low-density zoning meant an auto for every trip. Walking and transit were impractical. Older suburbs began to decline, inducing families to drive farther and farther to new suburban rings. Thousands of malls and shopping strips were abandoned. Traffic congestion became so severe that many families were obliged to build their lives around it.

I'll miss GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who has withdrawn from the race. I stepped off the plane from Chicago (broadcasting from the Chicago Regional Auto Show) and was given the word. I was shocked. I guess I might have been more shocked that it happened now, rather than that it happened. It seemed to be a matter of time, but I thought there was more campaigning left. I still don't understand the apparent disconnect between Republicans and conservatives. I realize the gap between being a Republican and being a conservative is wider than ever. Not as wide as, say, a river, but more like, oh, maybe a Bush. • According to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll, President Bush has reached his lowest approval rating with 30 percent of those polled saying they are happy with the job he's doing (overall) as president; he apparently is also at an all-time low in his support among Republicans.
