Interviewing a 'real' vampire
Even Savannah's "undead" and their friends like to paint the town red every now and then. The moon looks like a blood-red orange cut in half as dread passes over me. The sensation is momentary, but justifiable. I am, after all, standing at the threshold of a vampire sanctuary. And not just any vampire sanctuary. This one is occupied by the director of Black Oaks Savannah, a local organization that serves the city's vampires, witches, druids and pagans. When Black Oaks sent a notice to the Savannah Morning News announcing an early August meet-and-greet social to be held at Elysium, a downtown wine bar, I was intrigued. What do vampires talk about at a wine bar, I wondered. So I made contact and asked for an interview.

Nick and Vanessa's Pre-Super Bowl Tee Time
Nick and Vanessa headed to the golf course on Saturday for the first ever Super Skins Celebrity Golf Classic in Arizona. Nick got all decked out in golf gear, right down to his dorky visor, while Vanessa went with the classic jeans and polo combination. Looks like she decided to play cheerleader this time around rather than work on her putting, but it's sweet that she's always there to support her man's sporting events. The tournament raised money for charity, so Nick got to contribute to a good cause before hitting up the big game yesterday. .
Bottum: McCain and the Hoyas
I'd missed it earlier in the week, but over at Salon on Tuesday, Mike Madden noted that after the Georgetown-West Virginia game on January 26, John McCain called Mark Salter, his "longtime speechwriter/Senate chief of staff/intellectual alter ego," to describe the goaltend (er, block, I mean; yes, block) by which Patrick Ewing Jr. had won the game. "A Georgetown alum," Madden notes, "Salter has season tickets in the front row at the Verizon Center; about the only thing that gets him more fired up than Mitt Romney is Big East basketball. (At the bar after the Super Bowl Sunday night, he cursed at the TV when the Boston Fox affiliate compared the Giants' win to Villanova's 1985 NCAA tournament upset win over Georgetown)." Seems pretty newsworthy to me, but Madden pushes it into the mystical territory of the true Georgetown fanatic where my daughter and I dwell when he adds: "The Hoyas have been a near-perfect predictor of McCain's fortunes this year.
To know Leipold is to like him
He's one of the best owners I've ever been around," Diamond said from Nashville. "He's a terrific guy, he's very passionate about sports and hockey, and very knowledgeable. He's outstanding." Diamond said Leipold's passion for and knowledge of sports makes him special. "Yet he's a very down to earth guy; he is not an egomaniac owner type that we see often in sports," Diamond, 54, said. Although Leipold resides in Racine, Wis., Diamond said he attended Predators games regularly. Leipold has a private jet. "Now he'll have a much shorter flight," Diamond said. "Now, he can drive." Diamond said Leipold made a strong effort to make the Predators competitive. "I know he was disappointed last year when he had gone out and acquired Peter Forsberg for the playoff run and then got beat in the first round," he said.
