Body Over Mind
All Muslims know that Ramadan is supposed to be 30 days of spirituality and self-sacrifice, a chance for one to cleanse both body and soul, but the majority of us tend to do just the opposite. From a health standpoint, what actually takes place during Ramadan is quite frightening. As soon as the hilal (crescent moon) has been spotted and the announcement of the start of Ramadan has been made, we all switch into ‘fasting mode,' which usually means three things: gastronomic overindulgence, sleep deprivation and marathon television viewing. The result of this assault on the system usually leads to chronic fatigue, headaches, indigestion, constipation and for many an ‘inexplicable' 3-4 kilo weight gain by month's end. Not exactly the normal outcome of a 30-day fast. Nutritionists and religious experts alike strongly urge those who fast to follow a few simple guidelines that can make Ramadan a more spiritual and healthy month.
Bush grants Navy waiver from sonar ruling
What has the Navy up in arms is a Jan. 3 decision by U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper in Los Angeles that restricted use of sonar in war exercises planned off the coast of San Diego and other Southern California counties through January 2009. The next such exercise is set to begin around the middle of next week and last several days.The ruling, called an injunction, bars sonar use within 12 miles of the shore and in an underwater canyon stretching from Santa Catalina Island off Orange County to the Navy-owned San Clemente Island west of San Diego. The canyon has a large concentration of wildlife.The Navy likes to train in Southern California's shallow waters and underwater canyons, as they teach sailors how to detect submarines in an environment where enemies love to hide. Because of the canyons and shallow ground, and because of the thick concentration of animals, there are many sounds and they tend to ricochet in all directions, Navy officials say.

Crisis? Only because the BCCI chose to make it one
Provided Steve Bucknor is allowed the dignified retirement he wants and deserves, at a time of his own choosing, the frequently villified ICC may be said to have come rather well out of the affair of Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds. I am not sure that the same is true of the BCCI, whose muscles were flexed somewhat indecently throughout. One understands, of course, the particular sensitivity of matters pertaining to race, but either the BCCI, like all other national representative bodies, accepts the rules of the ICC and, in this case, the procedures that everyone has agreed, whatever the outcome, or there is potential anarchy. The row that erupted at Sydney when some of the Australian players accused Harbhajan of calling Symonds a 'monkey' was only a crisis so long as the BCCI chose to make it so.
