Adult sufferers find acne is hard to face
Age lines and acne? This wasn't supposed to happen. Acne, normally the bane of teenagers, was flaring up on Kim Noble's 50-year-old face, causing the Atlanta businesswoman no small degree of frustration. "I started when I was a teenager with acne problems, and as I got older, it got worse," she says. "I was told it was due to stress and hormones. I've tried everything that was out there, from (rubbing) alcohol to injections to Accutane to Proactiv," says Noble, who has been seeing a dermatologist for years but still has flare-ups. She's not alone. Dr. Jodi Ganz, an Atlanta dermatologist, estimates half her patients are adults with mild to severe acne breakouts. "There are a ton of people with adult acne. For women, flare-ups usually occur the week before their periods; that's what we call hormonally linked acne.
Across the Universe: 2-Disc Deluxe Edition (2008)
As a delivery system for injecting a new generation with Beatles music, Across the Universe is efficient as well as playful and ferocious much like the Fab Four themselves. The movie is almost an opera: plot primarily conveyed through song. And while Universe's thin 1960s-era romance never achieves the emotional complexity of even so ''simple'' a song as ''All My Loving,'' the film sure knows how to present that melody with an energy and visual invention that make you adore the tune all the more. We TV fans already knew that Universe's female lead, Evan Rachel Wood, had a beautiful voice from the few times she sang on the ABC series Once and Again. The rest of the lesser-known cast, meanwhile particularly Wood's romantic interest, played by Jim Sturgess have expressive instruments that only occasionally succumb to the Broadway-style belting that characterizes so many movie musicals.
Off-duty Wayne County deputy snared in prostitution sting
A Wayne County deputy was among 18 people arrested in a call girl sting over the weekend. Sheriff Warren Evans tells The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press the unidentified deputy faces misdemeanor charges and his police powers are suspended. The off-duty deputy was ticketed during a sting targeting prostitutes and pimps who used an Internet site to advertise escort services. An undercover female deputy answered and set up a rendezvous when the deputy called the cell phone of one of the women being detained. The caller offered to pay for sex acts and was ticketed for solicitation. Fifteen women will be arraigned on misdemeanor charges Monday. Two men suspected of being pimps will be charged with pandering _ a four-year felony. .
Counties launch social services hot line
Beginning today, anyone in the Bay Area who needs help with food, housing, employment or health care can simply dial 211. The three-digit hot line began operating in San Francisco nearly two years ago. Since then, six other Bay Area counties -- Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara and Solano -- have been in various stages of operation. As of this morning, the service is officially up and running throughout the seven-county region. In Contra Costa County, 211 has operated in test mode until today. Still, operators at the Contra Costa Crisis Center have been fielding hundreds of calls a month. "Near Concord? OK, let's see, hmm," specialist Minerva Blaine told a caller Friday, scrolling through a computer database to find affordable housing units for the homeless mother of a new baby.
