Keep Unborn Baby Healthy: Dos and Don'ts
Although there is no way to guarantee that your baby will be born 100 percent healthy, expecting mothers can take certain steps to reduce the risk of some physical and intellectual abnormalities. The National Women's Health Information Center and AVSC International, an organization that promotes reproductive health care worldwide, give some tips for pregnant women: Visit a health-care provider in the first trimester of your pregnancy, and then at regular intervals until you give birth. Contact your insurance provider or, if you don't have one, contact your local family or social services for health insurance options. Eat healthy foods. Your doctor may instruct you with some specific nutrition guidelines. Get regular physical activity.

School districts finding a new way to save money: Outsource finances
Most of the day-to-day operation of the Brooklyn Center School District hums around its district offices just off Interstate 94. But the bulk of the number-crunching may be happening in Rochester, or in a home office elsewhere in the metro area. Brooklyn Center, Fridley and Columbia Heights are among a handful of smaller districts and charter schools around the state that are outsourcing all or part of their financial management to a private company, School Management Services, based in Rochester. It's a trend that may reflect a shortage of qualified school professionals, as baby boomers retire, said Sue Crockett, executive director of the Minnesota Association of School Business Professionals. And as school finance specialists become more in-demand, they become harder for small districts to attract and retain.

The men's and women's championships were hosted for the second consecutive year by the Aramco Houston Half Marathon. Though the 36th annual event started under ideal conditions with clear skies and a temperature of 48 degrees, the leaders passed the first mile in a relaxed 5:05 before Carney, Jason Lehmkuhle, and Ryan Kirkpatrick took charge of the field, leading the field through the second mile in 4:33. The trio gradually extended a lead over the chase pack that included two-time champion Dan Browne and Steve Sundell.

When U2 was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Bono made a pointed statement to the executives in the room, saying, "The way things are now, there never would have been a U2." He meant that new bands have no room to develop, and are often dropped if the first album doesn't do well. On the other side of that coin, huge names in the music world (Madonna, Paul McCartney) are leaving the major labels in droves, opting to start their own labels or jumping to smaller labels that seem better able to adapt to their artistic visions. In what can only be described as a coup in social experimentation, Radiohead left its label behind and stunned the music industry when they announced that their new independently released album, In Rainbows, would only be available via download, and consumers could choose for themselves what to pay for it.
