Physician, heal thyself – please

De facto, conventional medics push us into the arms of the alternative practitioners they like to denounce as "quacks" peddling superstition and snake oil. But when it comes to non- life-threatening medical problems, the anecdotal, experiential health advice I can tap into at my local health food store is generally sounder and more effective than anything my GP is likely to offer. Give me the herbalist or the homeopath over the new breed of GP anyday.

Anchors Away With RFID Smartbuoys

A new electronic mooring system billed as a boon for pampered boaters is also good for the environment since it eliminates the need for dropping a coral-killing anchor.

The Italian-engineered MarPark system, launched on an experimental basis last summer in a few protected areas in Liguria and Sardinia, lets boaters cruise into idyllic bays and hook a rope with a rubber ring to a smartbuoy. Simple as that, they're safely harbored, no anchor necessary.

And that's just the start. If they've reserved a water taxi or need supplies or services, a microchip in their SeaPass ring relays that info to an onshore service center. A text message reassures the skipper via mobile phone that all systems are go.

Like many inventions, MarPark (mare means sea in Italian) was born out of frustration.

Benni McCarthy takes no prisoners as Sunderland are left fit to drop

A new year, but the same old story for Sunderland. Roy Keane’s team dropped into the Barclays Premier League relegation zone last night thanks to a combination of Wigan Athletic’s draw away to Liverpool and their inability to perform away from Wearside. A seventh successive defeat on the road means that Sunderland have taken only two away points all season and have yet to keep a clean sheet on their travels.

"It’s not nice, but I’ve said that the priority for us is not to be there come May," Keane said. "We had a chance to get further away from it tonight, and these opportunities keep slipping us by. Our home form is keeping us in touch."

They could count themselves unlucky at Ewood Park, although a less charitable view would be that they shot themselves in the foot — twice.
